Recently, Kenan Dikilitaş and ECIU University colleagues Tim Marshall and Masoumeh Shahverdi published a new book on challenge-based learning (CBL) – offering a closer look at the methodology and its potential.
This book maps the role of challenge-based learning (CBL) in the transformation of higher education, towards being sector-informed and student-driven. CBL democratises the process of learning by repositioning students as drivers, who are empowered to make decisions on course content, assess needs in the real world and develop opinions. Teachers monitor student learning and engagement and mentor students to express their needs.
The book highlights existing CBL practices in different settings and includes case studies which detail the practical application of CBL in multiple contexts. The authors develop an emerging theory of practical learning based on the insights of curriculum designers, practitioners and students. The book will be of interest to researchers, teacher educators or trainers and research supervisors in higher education.
The book includes case studies, chapter reviews, feedback, and suggestions authored by ECIU University staff from the University of Stavanger, Hamburg University of Technology, Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, University of Linköping, University of Trento, University of Twente, Dublin City University and Kaunas University of Technology in collaboration with their colleagues. Some of the case studies are collaboratively penned by staff from several different universities and one case study is even co-authored by former ECIU University students. Thus, the book places a special emphasis on the implementation of CBL within ECIU University institutions – in different educational contexts.
The book is an inspiring read for everyone interested in CBL – showcasing ECIU University's strengths in both education and CBL research.
