Professional Communication

Description

Professional communication is the third out of four courses on transferable skills recommended by EU Principles for Innovative Training’ transferable skills (European Commission, 2011). The goal of the course is to practice and reflect on the communication and presentation skills needed for different contexts, namely oral presentations (e.g. conference, pitching ideas) to different audiences (e.g. academic conferences and non-academic public presentation), using different aids (e.g. posters, PowerPoint) and in different environments (e.g. physical and virtual). Additionally, it provides several tips and strategies for participants to use during and after their PhD study. The course will be online, with small lectures, hands-on exercises, group-work, presentations and discussions in plenum as main activities.

Learning outcomes    

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

• Define communication and what makes a communicator effective;
• Describe different types of communication as part of their academic life and reflect one their communication skills for different contexts;
• Identify areas to improve on their communication skills;
• Select and apply different techniques and tools to communicate effectively and in different contexts.
  

Format

Online. Participants should be available on the following dates: 24 and 25 October 2022. Preparation for the course will start one month before the online sessions and includes a 750 words small essay.

Evaluation

The successfully completion of the course requires:

• Presence and active participation in all synchronous activities. Active participation is understood as provide inputs and contributions when requested, whether in group exercises, lectures and plenum presentations and discussion.
• Carry out and deliverable the preparation and assignments requested in the due date (i.e. in the deadline given).
