This course aims to teach you about practical ways to set up and nurture regional ecosystems that work together in research and innovation for society. Such ecosystems are increasingly required for access to European funding streams. You will be introduced to key concepts of CBR and deepen your understanding of what actions are necessary to work together programmatically – rather than in individual come-and-go projects.
Featuring a unique experience with 2 full days of activities at the University of Twente, you will be guided in the challenge-based approach to research, which focuses on achieving meaningful societal change. Further, participating in this course will allow you to build and strengthen your relationships with ECIU researchers and prepare you to apply for future EU funding calls. Social events are planned for the Thursday and Friday evenings to connect with your fellow researchers and enjoy the city of Enschede on a personal level. Additionally, we encourage you to extend the weekend to explore the Netherlands, Germany, or other nearby regions at your own pace, possibly with new colleagues from the course.

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:
- Define challenge-based research, including related relevant concepts and what kinds of challenges are considered suitable for research.
- Distinguish between project-based and programmatic collaborations with stakeholders outside of academia.
- Understand the implications of this distinction in terms of how research efforts are organised and funded.
- Navigate the requirements at different levels of participating organisations (universities, governments, industry, citizen groups) for successful long-term collaborations.
- Develop international research consortia aimed at conducting challenge-based research.
Blended. In-person workshops on 27 and 28 October in Enschede. Teams will continue to work online on the assignment for the subsequent month. Accommodation and meals are arranged by the UT. Travel and lodging costs are supported by your home university. Contact them to request information on financial support.

The successfully completionof the course requires: Presence at and active participation in the workshops;completion of written assignment. A certificate of completion will be awardedon successful completion of the course.
